MINGORA: Security forces have handed over control of up to 30 check posts in various areas of Swat Valley to the police as the former wrap their mission up after successful post-operation measures.

The posts were established along passageways across Swat in 2007, during the crackdown against the militant insurgency. Checkpoints in Mingora, Kabal, Malam Jabba, Matta, Bahrain and Kalam among others have now been handed over to the police.

Malakand Division ISPR Deputy PRO Major Amir Jawad Ahmed said the decision was taken in light of public demand. “After capacity building, the police will be able to maintain order in the valley. It is one of the many steps the army is taking in order to enable the civil administration to regain control,” he told The Express Tribune, adding security forces will support the police where necessary. Swat District Police Officer Sher Akbar Khan said the police will remain vigilant and ensure the convenience of the general public.

Residents of the valley welcomed the move and said it was high time the civil administration took over the reins. “We really appreciate the step. It is vital for the government to play its part,” said Abdullah Khan, a local. “Since the local police are aware of our customs and well versed in the vernacular, they will maintain public order effectively,” said Akbar Ali, a university student.
